Boca SYL teams wrap up fifth season
U16’s still in hunt for SYL North American Finals

TOMS RIVER, NJ — The Jersey Shore Boca Super Y-League teams wrapped-up their 2005 seasons for the most part last Sunday in Maryland when three of Boca’s five SYL teams squared-off against the Baltimore Bays at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. The club completed its fifth consecutive year in North America’s most competitive elite youth soccer league.

The Boca U13s, who competed in the Super Y-League for the first time this year, lost to the powerful Bays on Sunday to end their season with a very respectable inaugural record of 4-5-1. The U13s were coached by long-time Boca veteran and former USL professional player Kirk Pericciuoli. They scored 23 goals while allowing the same number and finished in eighth place in the tough eleven-team U13 Mid Atlantic Division.

Coach Bill Carroll and the Boca U14 SYL team finished the 2005 season with an overall record of 3-9-0 after a tough loss to the Bays last Sunday. The Boca U14s scored 18 goals and gave-up 48 for an eighth place finish in the SYL’s ten-team U14 Mid Atlantic Division.

The Boca U15 team, who were coached by Hamilton, NJ native Tom Gentz, has one game remaining in the 2005 season against Baltimore. The Boca U15s hold a 3-9-0 mark after dropping a rough 6-2 loss to the Reading Rage Tuesday night. Boca found the back of the net 27 times while allowing opponents to score 37. They will finish in ninth place in the SYL’s ten team U15 Mid-Atlantic Division.

Gentz, who played his college soccer at the University of Delaware, also coaches the Boca U16 team which defeated Baltimore 4-1 last Sunday. The Boca U16s, who scored the most goals in their division (43), are currently in second place in the SYL’s ten team U16 Mid-Atlantic Division with a record of 9-2-1 and are vying for a chance to return to the SYL North American Finals in Tampa, Florida in November as the U16 Mid Atlantic Division runner-up.

If the U16s defeat the Chesapeake Athletic Club in their final regular season SYL game scheduled at the Manchester Soccer Complex later this month, they will secure an automatic trip to the SYL North American Finals in which they appeared last year in the under-15 age group.

Stanley Touze (16 goals and nine assists), Varlee Koon (five goals and eight assists) and Bryan Hutches (four goals and two assists) lead the Boca U16s in scoring for the season. Touze and Koon were selected to the Super Y-League U16 ODP Regional Pool in 2004.

The Boca U19 Super Y-League team played in the very competitive SYL Metro Division and finished their season on July 23rd with a 4-8-0 record and a fifth place finish in the seven-team division which included powerhouse clubs FC Westchester, Ironbound SC, Storm Academy and Metrostars. The Boca U19s, who were coached by Neumann College (PA) assistant men’s Coach Wolf Finger, scored 15 goals while allowing 37.

“We were very proud to be part of the Super Y-League again in 2005 and to give our players the opportunity to compete against some of the best young soccer talent in the United States” said Walt Konopka a member of the Jersey Shore Boca Board of Directors.

The Super Y-League is finishing its seventh season of league play in 2005 and featured the top youth soccer clubs and players in the United States and Canada.

Affiliated with US Soccer and partnered with US Club Soccer, the league is designed for talented youth players destined for professional or international careers.

Through Olympic Development (ODP) status programs such as the North American Finals and National ODP Camps, the nation’s top players who compete in the SYL can be considered for selection to US National Team Programs.

The Super Y-League is the only North American youth league designed for the top one percent of elite youth players in the United States and Canada.

Jersey Shore Boca has been the only member of the Super Y-League from Monmouth or Ocean County New Jersey since their inception into the league in 2001.

“Any player who participated with us in the Super Y-League this year received a taste of not only what it’s like to play at the next level but what it will take for them to personally achieve that goal. Regardless of wins and losses, the fact that we are able to provide our shore area players with this outstanding level of competition is tremendous toward their overall development” Konopka finished.

Jersey Shore Boca has been a fixture in the soccer community since 1978 and is one of the most respected soccer clubs on the East Coast. The Club is celebrating their 27-year anniversary in 2005.
