U23 team standouts garner league, school and career recognition

TOMS RIVER, NJ (October 25, 2007) – Several standouts from the Jersey Shore Boca U23 women’s team this past summer received honors from their respective NCAA college soccer conferences during the past several weeks with one setting a new school and individual career achievement along the way and another helping her squad to a new all-time, program win record.

College of New Jersey senior defender Courtney Krol (Howell) earned New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Defensive Player of the Week honors for the week of Oct. 21 for second time this season after contributing both offensively and defensively in a pair of Lions’ victories.

The former Rebel first registered a goal while anchoring a defense that held William Paterson without a shot in a 3-0 road win over the Pioneers.

Krol wrapped up the week by notching a goal and an assist for three points while leading a defensive unit that held NJCU to just one shot on goal in a 10-0 win over the Gothic Knights.

The two-time reigning NJAC Defensive Player of the Year is a key cog in a TCNJ defense that has recorded 12 shutouts in 15 matches played on the season.

UPENN sophomore Jessica Fuccello (Brick) was named the Ivy League Player of the Week in women’s soccer for the week of Oct. 21.

It marked the second time the Boca standout has been honored this season; the other came on Sept. 4.

Fuccello’s honor comes on the heels of a 2-1 win over Yale, in which she scored the first goal and set up what proved to be the match-winner.

With nine goals this season, the Brick Memorial graduate has already matched her total from last year and her 18 career goals already place her in a tie for seventh place on Penn’s career list.

Fuccello has scored in four-straight matches, and in four Ivy matches she has three goals and an assist for seven points. She currently leads the Ivy League in goals and points per match.

Fellow Brick resident Emily Wagner, a senior goalkeeper at Lock Haven University was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Player of the Week on Oct. 8 for her efforts in leading the Lady Eagles to a 2-0 week.

Wagner made 15 saves over the two-game span in 1-0 shutouts of both Clarion University and Shippensburg University.

In the 1-0 double overtime win over Shippensburg on the road, the former Green Dragon turned away eight shots on her way to her fourth shutout on the season.

In the important PSAC West win over Clarion, Wagner made seven saves in helping the Lady Eagles to the victory.

Of those seven saves it was Wagner’s third in the just the eighth minute of play that etched her name in the Lady Eagles record books as the Boca U23 keeper now sits atop the all-time Lock Haven career save list with 307 saves and counting.

Senior Captain Meghan Kielt (Brick) helped the Georgian Court University women’s soccer team set a new school record in wins in a season by defeating the Dominican College Chargers 1-0 in the 2ot’s on Oct. 21 in Orangeburg, New York.

The victory was Georgian Court’s 12th of the 2007 season breaking the previous record set in the 2006 season.

It was also the Lions 8th Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win which also is a new team high.

In the 108th minute, the former Brick Township High School standout broke free down the left flank and served a ball across the box to a wide open Amy Van Blarcom who headed home the game winner.

Centenary College midfielder Tanya DiDonna (Colts Neck) was named Player of the Week for both the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) and the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Region for the week of Sept. 27.

DiDonna becomes the first women’s soccer player to be selected as player of the week in the PAC Conference and the first ECAC winner this fall.

A senior captain for the Lady Cyclones, the Middletown South alum, scored seven goals in a 3-0 week.

DiDonna recorded a hat trick against PAC rival Cedar Crest College and scored two goals in a game against non-conference Baptist Bible College and another two in the match against their last PAC rival of the week, College of Notre Dame.

In the three games the Colts Neck native was able to surpass her high in previous seasons of six goals.

The Boca U23 standout presently has tallied 21 goals over her four years at Centenary.

Krol, Fuccello, Wagner, Kielt and DiDonna were all members of the inaugural Jersey Shore Boca U23 women’s team this past summer that advanced to the Mid-Atlantic Summer Showcase League (MSSL) Champion Cup finals.
