Jersey Shore Boca coaches honored by NJSA

The New Jersey Soccer Association has announced that Jersey Shore Boca veterans Walt Pericciouli and Ryan Applegate will be honored at the Association’s annual awards banquet April 25 at the L’Affaire Restaurant, Mountainside, at 6:30 p.m.
Pericciouli, one of the founders of Jersey Shore Boca, will be inducted into the NJSA Hall of Fame Class of 2008 in the Coaches Category. Applegate, who coaches Boca’s open men’s team, will be honored as the 2007-08 NJSA Coach of the Year.
Pericciouli, Berkeley, is a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) A licensed coach who can trace his soccer heritage back to his father, Wally Peters, who is enshrined in the National Soccer Hall of Fame, Oneonta, N.Y.
Pericciouli starred at Eastside High School, Paterson, and at Springfield College, graduating in 1966. He played in several New Jersey semiprofessional leagues after college.
Pericciouli began coaching youth teams in 1976, and in 1978, along with Phil Moretta, founded Jersey Shore Boca to enhance the development of the most talented players at the Jersey Shore.
In 1979, Pericciouli began the NCAA Division III program at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. He coached the Ospreys to an 11-year record of 79-93-22.
Pericciouli coached the Boca semiprofessional team in the North East Super Soccer League and the New Jersey Champions League. He was also a staff coach for several years in the NJYSA and USYSA Region I Olympic Development programs.
He was head coach of the New Jersey Stallions of the United Soccer Leagues in 1996. He was the coach of one of four Jersey Shore Boca Super-Y League teams from 2001-05 and the general manager of Boca’s Premiere Development League team in 2003.
He has been with the club for 30 years and will be the head coach of the Boca U23-U20 men’s team this summer.
Applegate, Berkeley, has coached the Boca men’s open team for several years. The Central Regional graduate was a four-year starter at Rowan University from 1994-97.
With Applegate in the lineup, the Profs went 63-14-5, advanced to the regionals of the NCAA Division III Tournament each year. They were nationally ranked in the Top 20 each season.
Rowan won the New Jersey Athletic Conference in 1995 and was ranked fourth in the nation.
In 2007-08, Boca went 18-2-4, the best all-around season record produced by a Boca adult team. The Boca men finished third in the Garden State Soccer League (GSSL) semipro Elite Division in 2007-08 with Lithuanian-born Tomas Banionis leading Boca with 11 goals.
Applegate led the Boca men to the finals of the 2008 NJ State Open Cup in which it lost to the Newark Enforcers. And on June 22 in the last match of the season, Applegate and the Boca men downed Sporting Club Portugal of Newark, 5-2, to win the GSSL League Cup.
The Boca men shattered their opponents on their way to the Cup title with a 5-0 record and posted a +19 goal differential. It was the first time in club history a Boca team won the GSSL League Cup silverware.
