J.S. Boca soccer club joins Super Y-League

TOMS RIVER — The Board of Directors of Jersey Shore Boca has announced the club has accepted an invitation to compete in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) Super Y-League for the 2001 season.
A direct affiliate of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), the Super Y-League is a professionalized system that is the first building block for developing the highest level youth players in North America.
“The league is specifically designed to provide for the needs of elite youth players by organizing week in and week out intense competition in a professional environment at a regional level within a league format,” said Walt Konopka, treasurer and director of Jersey Shore BOCA. “The league will attract the top one percent of youth players who aspire to either play in college, the A-League, Major League Soccer for National teams or abroad.”
The Super Y-League is the only national youth league in the United States and Canada. The Super Y-League is managed by the USL. The USL pyramid system contains the A-League, D3 Pro League, PDL, W-League and the Super Y-League.
The latter kicks off its third season this year.
The 2001 season will provide the highest level of competition for about 100 of the best youth soccer clubs in the United States and Canada.
The Super Y-League’s scope will include the under 14, under 16 and under 18 boys age groups in the Great Lakes, Gulf, Independent, Metro, Mid Atlantic, Midwest, New England, Northwest, South Atlantic, South Central, Southeast, Southwest and West regions.
The Canadians will hone their talents against teams in the Northwest and Great Lakes regions. Each region will be comprised of six to eight clubs competing in a 14-16 game regular-season schedule. Teams will begin play in March and culminate with the regional championships and the National Finals in August.
Jersey Shore Boca will be one of fiver clubs from New Jersey to participate in the Super Y-League for 2001 and was the lone club invited from Ocean, Monmouth, Atlantic and Cape May counties. Boca will compete in the Super Y-League’s Mid-Atlantic Region along with other elite clubs from New Jersey to Virginia.
Boca will feed three teams for the 2001 season — the under 18s, under 16s and under 14s.
Boca’s schedule will include games with other regions such as the Metro Region, which will include teams from the New York metropolitan area.
DC United will be the first of several MLS teams to participate in and support the Super Y-League in the future.
Jersey Shore Boca was founded in 1978. Based in Toms River, programs include youth level teams from under 12 to under 19, a men’s 23-under team and a men’s semi-pro team.
