Coach Tom Gentz and the Boca U15 team head to the SYL North American Finals

TOMS RIVER, NJ (September 10, 2004) – Within a soccer club that owns a twenty-five year history of team, player and coaching accolades and an alumni list that is scattered with former club stars that played against Pele in the North American Soccer League, professionals from Major League Soccer and the United Soccer Leagues along with US National Team players and coaches and college and high school All-Americans among others, Coach Tom Gentz and the Jersey Shore Boca U15 Super Y-League team have carved their own chapter in Boca’s history annuls this year as they head to Florida for the 2004 Super Y-League North American Championship in November.

This will be the first time in the history of Jersey Shore Boca’s four year Super Y-League participation that a Boca team will play for the SYL North American Championship.

Under Coach Gentz, the Jersey Shore Boca U15 team captured first place this year in the Super Y-League’s U15 Mid-Atlantic Division, which included some of the best 15 year old teams in the nation, with an overall record of 11 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie which guaranteed them a trip to the Finals.

The Boca U15s scored 52 goals during the SYL season while only allowing 14. They were undefeated at home with 5 wins and 1 tie which came at the hands of powerhouse Super Nova FC, the U15 SYL Mid-Atlantic Division runner-up back on July 8th at the Manchester Soccer Complex.

On the road, the Boca U15s compiled a record of 6 wins and 1 loss with their only defeat of the season coming on August 8th against the Northern Virginia Royals.

“On behalf of all our Boca coaches, players, staff, administrators and alumni, I would like to congratulate Tom and all our U15 team members for such a tremendous accomplishment. This is a monumental event which I would consider the soccer equivalent of getting to the Little League World Series. We all wish them the best of success at the Super Y-League Championships” mentioned Al Schwartz, President of Jersey Shore Boca.

During the 2004 Super Y-League season, the Boca U15s were led by Joseph Sorrentino (25 goals & 6 assists), Kevin Melfi (8 goals & 2 assists), Nick Ciocco (6 goals & 3 assists) and Zachary Bove (4 goals & 4 assists). Boca goalkeeper Kevin McMullen led the U15 defensive corps that allowed a division low 14 goals in 13 games.

Sorrentino, who is a member of the United States Under-17 National Team player pool, recently became a full time resident of the US National Teams Program and started classes a few weeks ago at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

The Super Y-League is the only North American youth soccer league designed for the top one percent of elite youth players in the United States and Canada.

As a national affiliate of the United States Soccer Federation, the Super Y-League provides the national league structure to develop players and helps identify elite players for US National Team programs through ODP status programs such as the SYL Finals and Regional Select Team weekends.

The scope of the Super Y-League stretches from as far as Vancouver, BC to Miami, FL and from Boston, MA to Los Angeles, CA.

Jersey Shore Boca has been the only member of the Super Y-League from Monmouth or Ocean County since their inception into the league in 2001.

Boca fielded a record six Super Y-League teams during 2004, the highest number ever in its SYL history.

“Coach Tom Gentz and our Boca U-15 team have certainly earned their spot in our club’s history book. What a tremendous achievement. He guided his team against some of the best young soccer talent in the United States. We are extremely proud of Coach Gentz, all assistant coaches and all administrators who helped these fifteen year-olds head to Florida and the Super Y-League National Finals” commented Walt Konopka, a member of the Jersey Shore Boca Board of Directors.

The Super Y-League Under-13 through Under-17 boys and girls Finals will be held November 19-23, 2004 in Orlando, Florida.

The Super Y-League North American Finals is a sanctioned Olympic Development Program (ODP) of the United States Soccer Federation for identifying players for U.S. National Team Programs. During the Finals players will be scouted by various U.S. National Team Staff Coaches.

“We’ve been able to secure excellent facilities for both Finals,” said Matt Weibe, Director of the Super Y-League. “The Super Y-League Finals has become the major youth league championship in North America. The timing of the event and the quality of the teams attending will draw some great attention to the soccer community as well as many scouts at the National Team, professional and collegiate levels.”

Jersey Shore Boca has been a fixture in the soccer community since 1978 and is one of the most respected soccer clubs on the East Coast.

The Club celebrated their 25-year anniversary in 2003.
