Club will be a part of nation’s top elite youth league for fourth straight year

TOMS RIVER, NJ (April 27, 2004) – The Jersey Shore Boca Soccer Club will begin their fourth consecutive year of competition in the Super Y-League, the nation’s top elite youth soccer league, on Wednesday May 5th when the Boca U-19 team under Coach Wolfgang Finger travels to Winslow Township and squares-off against their in-state rival South Jersey Barons in Boca’s first game of the 2004 SYL season.

“We have a mixture of both older and younger players on our roster at the U19 level. We’re going to ask our older kids to step-up and provide some leadership and direction to this group during the season. It just so happens that our first game against the Barons will be one of our most competitive. I think our kids will be ready” mentioned Coach Finger.

On Sunday May 9th Boca opens their 2004 Super Y-League home campaign when U13 and U14 teams from powerhouse Super Nova FC (PA) travel to the New Jersey shore to take on their Boca counterparts.

Start times for Boca’s home openers are 12 noon and 2pm respectively at the Manchester Soccer Complex on Colonial Drive in Manchester Township.

Jersey Shore Boca will field a record six Super Y-League teams during 2004, the highest number ever in its SYL history.

Along with their newest U-14 girls team, Jersey Shore Boca will also field five boys teams this year; U-13s, U-14s, U-15s, U-16s and U-19s.

All of Boca’s 2004 SYL teams will compete in the historically tough Mid-Atlantic Division in the Northeast Conference.

“We are very excited and proud to be part of the Super Y-League again in 2004 and to give our shore area players the opportunity to compete against some of the best young soccer talent in the United States. This will be our fourth consecutive year in the Super Y-League. I believe I speak for all of our directors, coaches and staff when I say that the Super Y-League is the most competitive youth soccer league in the Country” said Al Schwartz, the President of Jersey Shore Boca.

“We would also like to thank all the Directors and members of the Manchester Soccer Club for their help and cooperation by allowing us to utilize one of the best soccer venues at the NJ shore for our 2004 Super Y-League season. The enviornment and atmosphere there should be tremendous” Schwartz continued.

In addition to the South Jersey Barons and Super Nova FC, the Boca Super Y-League teams will again face some of the top youth soccer clubs in the United States this season including DC United (DC), Northern Virginia Royals (VA), Baltimore Bays (MD), The Chesapeake Athletic Club (MD) and Reading Rage (PA) among others.

Each of the six Boca SYL teams will play between 14 and 16 games in a home and away series against other members of the Mid-Atlantic Division.

As a whole, Boca teams will play 85 regular season Super Y-League games in total during the 2004 season between May 5th and August 21st.

The winner and runner-up in each of the Super Y-League’s seven divisions will compete for the Super Y-League National Championship after the completion of the regular season.

The Super Y-League is the only North American youth league designed for the top one percent of elite youth players in the United States and Canada.

As a national affiliate of the United States Soccer Federation, the Super Y-League provides the national league structure to develop players and helps identify elite players for National Team programs through ODP status programs such as the SYL Finals and Regional Select Team weekends.

The SYL pilot season in 1999 began with 16 teams in two major regions of the United States and expanded to 75 teams in five major regions in 2000. Last year 490 teams competed in week in – week out league competition in the 2003 SYL season.

The scope of the Super Y-League stretches from as far as Vancouver, BC to Miami, FL and from Boston, MA to Los Angeles, CA.

Jersey Shore Boca has been the only member of the Super Y-League from Monmouth or Ocean County since their inception into the league in 2001.

“We have now developed a solid track record and some baseline standards to gauge the effects of competing in the Super Y-League after three years. In hind-sight, everything has been extremely positive for our Club and our players” commented Walt Konopka, a member of the Jersey Shore Boca Board of Directors who also coached Boca SYL teams in 2001 and 2002.

“Any player who previously participated with us in the Super Y-League received a taste of not only what it’s like to play at the next level but what it will take to get there. I would expect the same feeling to come from all our players this year as well. Regardless of the wins and losses, the fact we are able to provide our local players with this level of competition is tremendous toward their overall development” Konopka added.

Some of the highlights and accomplishments of Boca’s first three years of SYL history include an inaugural .500 season (6-6-0) for the Boca U18s and U-18 SYL National Player of the Week honors for Chris Konopka (Toms River, NJ) in 2001; U-15 SYL National Player of the Week honors for Jara Habib (Marlboro, NJ) in 2002 and very respectable 4th place finishes for the Boca U14 (6-5-1) and U17 (6-6-1) SYL teams in 2003.

Other player achievements during the Club’s short SYL history include eight Jersey Shore Boca players being named to the 2003 Super Y-League Regional ODP Player Pool, one Boca SYL player (Joseph Sorrentino – Hamilton, NJ) being selected to the U-15 Boy’s US National Team Player Pool, one former Boca SYL player (Konopka) being considered for the U-20 Men’s US National Team Player Pool, sixteen Boca SYL alumni who participated in NCAA intercollegiate men’s soccer during 2003 and seven Boca SYL players from the Class of 2004 who will continue their soccer careers in college this fall.

Jersey Shore Boca has been a fixture in the soccer community since 1978 and is one of the most respected soccer clubs on the East Coast.

The Club celebrated their 25-year anniversary in 2003.
