Boca men to play for NJ Open Cup crown

The Jersey Shore Boca men’s open team will try to bring home some hardware as it squares off against the Newark Enforcers at the Manalapan Recreation Complex in the New Jersey State Open Cup championship Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Boca advanced to the championship game by downing the Spring Street Strikers from northern New Jersey, 4-2, May 21 at the Berkeley Soccer Complex in the semifinals.

Lithuanian-born Tomas Banionis of Berkeley Township, N.J. paced Boca against Spring Street with two goals while Stevens Tech graduate Christian Pontier (Forked River, N.J.) and former Monmouth University standout and Southern Regional High School Hall of Famer Guy Lockwood (Manahawkin, N.J.) added one goal apiece.

Newark defeated Elizabeth Pegasus, 6-3, to earn its final place.

The New Jersey Soccer Association Open Cup championship game open to the general public. Admission is free.

Former shore area standouts Ryan Applegate of Central Regional and Rowan University and Christian Treney of Toms River East and Methodist College are player-coaches of the Boca men.

The Boca men captured the NJ State Open Cup crown in 2004.
