Staff report
The Jersey Shore Boca Under 18 team downed the Northern Virginia Royals, Chantilly, 2-1, in a United States Soccer Leagues Super Y match at Toms River High School North.

The teams battled to a scoreless halftime tie.

Boca started the scoring in the 45th minute when Charlie Smith, a midfielder who is a Toms River East senior, won a ball in the middle third of the pitch. After switching direction to get past two defenders, Smith chipped a ball to a running Kirk Peters, a Lacey graduate. Peters, a sophomore at William Paterson University, blasted a right-footed shot into the net.

Northern Virginia tied the score, slipping a shot past keeper Chris Konopa, a junior from Toms River East who registered 10 saves.

Boca netted the game-winner in the 75th minute.

Travis Iapicco, a Lacey graduate, won a ball from his right midfield slot in the middle third of the field. The Stevens Institute of Technology freshman played a 20-yard diagonal ball behind the defense to the feet of a streaking Peters on the left side. Peters deposited the game-winner into the far post corner.

First-year Jersey Shore is 6-5 and has guaranteed itself at least a .500 record. Boca will play its final game Saturday when it hosts the Richmond, Va., Kickers at 4:30 p.m. at North.
