November 19, 2001
The Jersey Shore Boca U17 men’s team wound up 1-1-1 this past weekend at the Hamilton Soccer Club College Showcase held at Mercer County Park in Trenton, NJ.
Boca started the day on Saturday with a 2-0 shutout of the Lawrenceville SC which is a member of the CJYS MAPS division.
In their early game on Sunday, Boca dropped a hard-fought loss to the Silver Lake Club from New York, another MAPS member team.
And in their final game of the tournament on Sunday, which may be preview of future USL Super Y-League battles in 2002, Boca tied the South Jersey Barons 0-0. In a very exciting match which saw Boca do everything except put the ball in the net, the U17s played a exceptional tactical game in font of a packed field of fans, spectators and coaches.
“I think everyone watching this match found out that our Boca U17s can play with the best around” said Coach Walt Konopka. “By the middle of the second half, we had them totally back on their heels…we just could not put the ball in the back of the net. It was an excellent match for us against a quality team”.
The Boca U17s will take some time off for the thanksgiving holiday, then resume training in preparation for their trip to Virginia to participate in the Old Dominion Cup, another college recruiting event, during the first week in December.
