Providence College men’s soccer coach Chaka Daley announced today that five student-athletes, including Jersey Shore Boca goalkeeper Chris Konopka, have signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Providence College and play soccer for the Friars in the fall.

Six Men’s Soccer Student-Athletes Commit To Attend Providence College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence College men’s soccer coach Chaka Daley announced on February 14 that student-athletes David Chase (Morris Plains, N.J.), Connor Curran-Hays (Camp Hill, Pa.), Scott Hankard (Glastonbury, Conn.), Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) and Joseph Weill (Merrick, N.Y.) have signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Providence College. A sixth student-athlete, Michael King (Ashland, Mass.), also has committed to attend Providence and will join the other five players beginning in September 2003.
Chase, a midfielder, served as a captain for Morristown High School in 2002. Morristown finished the season ranked 19th in the nation. Chase earned 2002 first team all-county honors, first team all-state accolades, a New Jersey Top-51 selection and was named one of the top three players in the county. In addition to playing for Morristown, Chase also played club soccer for Matchfit Academy and was a member of the New Jersey Olympic Development Program on the Under-15 and Under-17 squads.
Curran-Hays scored 70 goals and added 28 assists as a forward and a defender in his career at Camp Hill High School (Pa.). For his efforts, he earned First Team Mid Penn Conference honors as a sophomore, junior and a senior. Curran-Hays also was named 2002 Mid Penn Capital Division Player of the Year and he was a Pennsylvania All-State selection as a junior. He played club soccer for Super Nova and participated on the EPYSA State Olympic Development Program Team from 1996-2003. Curran-Hays will be attending the National Olympic Development Tournament with the EPYSA team this spring.
Hankard, a defender, played for Glastonbury (Conn.) High School. In 2002, he served as a captain of the Glastonbury team and earned all-state and All-New England accolades. Recently, Hankard was selected to be a member of the ADIDAS Under-19 All-America squad. He also played for the Region I Olympic Development Team and played club soccer for Oakwood.
King, a goalkeeper, attends Ashland (Mass.) High School and played club soccer for the Boston Eagles. As a junior, he led Ashland to a 17-4-2 mark and helped the team capture the Tri-Valley League title. In 2002, he was named a Metrowest Daily News All-Star and a Tri-Valley League First Team All-Star. He also was selected to be a member of the 2002 Nike Gotshalk’s New England All-Star Team. In club action, King backstopped the Boston Eagles to the 2002 Disney Showcase Championship.
Konopka posted a 1.18 goals against average and made 7.18 saves per game in his career at Toms River East (N.J.) High School. In 2002, he was named to the all-state senior all-star team. He also earned first team all-state, first team all-county and first team all-conference honors. In 2002, Konopka was a New Jersey Top 51 selection and earned NSCAA Regional High School All-America accolades. In addition to playing for the Jersey Shore Boca club team, Konopka played for the New Jersey State Olympic Development Team in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002. He also was a member of the Region I Olympic Development team in 2002.
Weill, a midfielder, was a four-year team MVP for Kellenberg Memorial High School (N.Y.). In 1998 and 2001, Weill helped Kellenberg to the Eastern New York State title. He was named all-league and All-Long Island as a junior and a senior. In 2002, Weill’s club team, East Meadow Hawks, captured the Capital Cup, the Columbia Tournament, the EM Refuel Tournament and was the Celtic League Champions. His club team also won the ENY state championship in 1998 and 2001.
“Our staff feels that we have compiled a talented group of student-athletes who will compete for a starting spot on our team and can compete in the BIG EAST Conference early in their college careers,” Daley said. “Some of these newcomers will impact our team immediately giving us an added dimension to our program. It also was essential to add quality depth to a young nucleus as we embark upon our mission to become a respected soccer program regionally, nationally and in the BIG EAST.”
