JACKSON TWP, NJ (June 27, 2010) – In a fiercely contested ninety minutes, the Jersey Shore Boca Over-30 men’s team topped Hazlet 3-1 on Sunday morning June 27 at the Jackson Justice Complex to capture the 2009-2010 Garden State Soccer League (GSSL) Over-30 Super Division League Cup and bring home the team’s first piece of hardware for the club.

The Boca men, who were looking to avenge a 1-0 loss to Hazlet in league play just weeks earlier, came out strong scoring the first goal of the match midway through the first half on a beautiful head ball into the upper right corner by Bayville’s Jimmy Dellapietro.

After Hazlet countered later in the first half to even the score at 1-1, Boca midfielder and former Southern Regional and East Carolina standout Rob Curran (Manahawkin) beat the Hazlet keeper to a fifty-fifty ball inside Hazlet’s eighteen yard box and finished with a solid left-footed strike to give the Boca men the eventual game winner and the lead 2-1 just before the first forty-five minutes ended.

The score would remain 2-1 until thirteen minutes left to play in the game when Boca’s central midfielder Marcelo Cawen, who was born in Uruguay, dished a perfect pass to Dellapietro who finished a one-time strike from the top of the eighteen into the left hand side of the net to put the match out of reach for Hazlet.

Goalkeeper Doug LaPerry, who starred at Toms River South and then Rowan University during his high school and college career, had a solid match between the pipes for the Boca men and was able to hold off the Hazlet attack for the final minutes of the game to secure the Cup title.

In the League Cup semi-final round held on June 20, Boca hosted a formidable FC Sputnik team that was ready for the challenge. At the end of regulation time, the game was tied at 5-5 and the 30 minute overtime ended with both teams locked at 6-6.

The match ended with Boca’s LaPerry making a diving save on Sputniks 5th and final penalty shot to give the Boca men a 4-3 advantage in the penalty kick shootout and send the men of blue and gold to the Cup finals.

The Boca over-30’s finished their 2009-2010 GSSL regular league campaign with an overall record of 10 wins, 3 ties and 5 losses and a total of 33 points which was good enough for a second place divisional finish 6 points behind Hazlet. The team tallied 57 goals in regular season play while conceding 37.

Lithuanian born Tomas Banionis (Bayville), who tallied 18 goals for Boca in regular season play, finished with the GSSL Over-30 individual scoring title.

Former Toms River North and Richard Stockton standout Jay Staiger finished with 10 goals for Boca for the season with Curran adding 6 tallies and former West Chester University star Luke Hurley (Bayville) netting 5.

Chris Cafarell (Lincroft) is player-coach of the team.
