Boca Teams Compete Well at 2001 Raleigh Shootout
November 13, 2001

The Jersey Shore Boca U17 and U18 men’s teams squared-off against some of the best soccer clubs in the nation this past weekend when both sides competed in the 2001 First Union Raleigh Shootout held in Raleigh NC.

On Saturday, the Boca U17s battled the Greenville Soccer Club (SC) in the first match of the day, to a scoreless draw for 89 minutes in a thrilling game played by both sides. Greenville, the 1999 Region II finalists and member of the Super Y-League this past summer, sneaked a goal in off a corner kick with 45 seconds left in the match. In the second game of the day, the Boca U17s spotted the Greensboro Futbol Club (NC), the eventual tournament champion, three goals in the first half while playing the second half to an even draw. On Sunday, the U17s lost a heart breaker 3-2 to the powerful Michigan Arsenal, the 2001 Michigan State Cup runner-up.

The Boca U18s also had their hands full during the tournament as they took on some of the most competitive clubs around. The U18s battled the Jackson Futbol Club (MS) for a full 90 minutes only to come up short 1-0. In the Saturday night spotlight game, Boca held the powerful Blackwatch Soccer Club at bay for 75 minutes, eventually loosing the match 4-1. On Sunday, the U18s dropped their final match of the tournament to the Albion Hurricanes (TX), the eventual tournament champion.

Although the results in the “W” column were disappointing, both Boca teams competed very well throughout the weekend and received a tremendous amount of exposure in front of the 250+ men’s collegiate coaches who were in attendance at this event.
