Boca Teams Resume GSSL Play

As the GSSL winter break comes to a close, the Boca men’s open team, women’s open team and men’s over-30 team will have their share of work cut out for them as all three squads set their sights on the capture of league championships during the remainder of the 2010-2011 season while Boca’s Tomas Banionis attempts to win golden boot awards and scoring titles in two separate GSSL divisions.

Men’s open, women’s open and men’s over-30 teams ready to continue their 2010-2011 league campaigns

Over-30 team undefeated as season continues

BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ (March 15, 2011) — As the Garden State Soccer League winter break comes to a close, the Jersey Shore Boca men’s open team, women’s open team and men’s over-30 team will each have their share of work cut out for them as all three squads set their sights on the capture of GSSL division titles plus some individual pieces of hardware during the remainder of the 2010-2011 season.

The Boca men’s open team continues the season with 5 wins, 1 tie and 4 losses and currently reside in sixth place with 16 points in the tough GSSL Men’s Super Division only 7 points shy of first place holders Sporting Club Portuguese from Newark.

Boca has scored 29 goals in 10 league matches while conceding 24.

Lithuanian born Tomas Banionis (Berkeley Township) leads the Boca men’s open team in scoring with 9 goals so far on the season which places him tied for first place in the race for the GSSL Men’s Super Division scoring title.

Banionis is also a member of the Boca over-30 men’s team.

Toms River native and former York College standout Jay Mancuso is second on the team in scoring with 6 tallies while Jamie Nelson (Toms River North – Richard Stockton) and Christian Pontier (Lacey – Stevens Tech) follow with 3 goals apiece.

Jim Keady (Belmar) a former professional player in the USL with the North Jersey Imperials has been solid for Boca between the pipes this season.

The Boca men’s open team will resume their GSSL season on Friday night, March 25 at 8:30 pm under the lights at the Berkeley Soccer Complex as they host United Nations FC from North Jersey.

The Jersey Shore Boca women’s open team holds an overall league record of 3 wins, no ties and 4 losses in the GSSL Women’s Premiere Division which places them in seventh place in the standings with 9 points heading into the first round of league play after the break.

The Peninsula Aztecs sit on top of the division with 27 points.

The Boca women have scored 17 goals during the current league stint to date while allowing 20.

Toms River native Jeanie McCafferty (Monsignor Donovan-Georgian Court College) and two former Jackson Memorial and Rider University standouts Jen Marcella and Sarah Artale share the team scoring lead with 3 goals each.

Katie Batiuk, a former Jackson Memorial and Rutgers University standout and Kristen Kowit (Red Bank Catholic), a two-time All-American and two-time ODAC “Player of the Year” at Lynchburg College have scored 2 goals each for the Boca women.

The Boca women will resume their 2010-2011 season at home on Sunday April 3 as they host US Parma at the John Patrick Sports Complex in Lakewood at 9:00am.

In only their third year of existence, the Jersey Shore Boca men’s over-30 team will continue their 2010-2011 season sitting on top of the Garden State Soccer League Over-30 elite division.

Boca will resume play on Sunday April 3 as they host the Monmouth Kickers at the Berkeley Soccer Complex with a start time scheduled at 9:00am.

The Boca over-30 men have won 9, tied 1 and lost 0 at the break and currently sit on top of the Men’s Over-30 Elite Division with 28 points.

The team scored a league leading 35 goals while conceding only 16.

Banionis, who captured last year’s GSSL Over-30 league scoring title, in on track again to earn his second accolade in as many years.

The skilled European forward has tallied an incredible 19 goals in 10 games for the Boca over-30s and leads the scoring race by 6 goals over his closest opponent.

Former West Chester University standout and Bayville native Luke Hurley along with Sal Colino (Toms River North-University of Tampa) are next in team scoring having notched 3 goals each.

Doug Laperry who starred at Toms River South before continuing his career at Rowan University backstops the Boca over-30s in the net.

The Boca over-30 men’s team is also the current holder of the 2010 Garden State Soccer League Over-30 Super Division League Cup.
