STAFF REPORT

The Jersey Shore Boca men’s open team won the New Jersey Amateur Cup with a 2-1 win over the German American Kickers in the championship game at the Eastern Soccer Complex, Berkeley.

Boca advanced to the United States Adult Soccer Association Regional Amateur Tournament late this spring. It hopes to compete in the 2006 USASA National Amateur Cup this summer in Frisco, Tex.

Boca took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when former Central Regional High School player John Carozza won a 50-50 ball about 30 yards out, side-stepped a defender and ripped a left-footed shot past the keeper.

GAK evened the score at one in the 55th minute off a free kick 20 yards out on the left side which deflected off several defenders and found its way into the back of the net.

Boca won the match in the 83rd minute.

Former Toms River South player Donny Gray received a ball out of the back on the right side, moved into the middle third of the field and played a 40-yard ball to Ken Masuhr, a Monsignor Donovan graduate and a current Kean University assistant coach, who streaked to the far post.

Masuhr, who starred for The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, collected the cross and buried the match-winner to the near post.

Boca veterans Ed Decker, a Toms River East graduate; Christian Treney, who also played for East, and former Southern Regional player Guy Lockwood limited GAK to minimum scoring opportunities in the final six minutes.

Boca is 5-4-1 overall. It awaits its seeding and opponent in the USASA Regional Amateur Tournament.
