It has been common place over the past thirty plus years of Jersey Shore Boca history to see players who have worn the club “Blue and Gold” scattered across the national college landscape excelling for their collegiate teams and in 2011 it will be no different when the NCAA college soccer season kicks-off this month. Shore area soccer fans should keep an eye on these eleven Boca standouts that are looking to leave their own mark within the college ranks this year.

Boca players look to excel as the 2011 NCAA college soccer season begins
TOMS RIVER, NJ (August 20, 2011) – It has been common place over the past thirty plus years of Jersey Shore Boca history to see players who have worn the club “Blue and Gold” scattered across the national college landscape excelling for their collegiate teams and in 2011 it will be no different when the NCAA college soccer season kicks-off this month.
Shore area soccer fans should keep an eye on these eleven Boca standouts that are looking to leave their own mark within the college ranks this year.
Lauren Albrecht (Marlton) Cherokee-Senior Goalkeeper-FDU Florham Park; Albrecht had a break-out year for the Devils under Coach Kristin Spohn in 2010. The athletic shot-stopper appeared in 15 games as a junior while starting 14. She recorded a GAA of 1.05 and Save % of 82.2 and helped FDU to an overall 15-7-2 record and a place in the ECAC semi-finals. For her three year college career, the standout keeper appeared in 48 games and started 32 of them, has made 168 saves and has played 2,976 minutes between the pipes at Florham Park. Albrecht has written her name in the Boca record books as a member of the historic Boca U23 women’s team for the past three years where she helped lead the team to three consecutive MSSL Cup Championships.
Liam Cahill (Whiting) Manchester-Sophomore Midfielder-FDU Teaneck; Cahill, a long-time Boca player who came through the Boca youth ranks, is primed for a break-out year for Coach Seth Roland and the Division I Knights. The hard-nosed, ever-working midfielder saw action in 14 contests as a freshman, including four starts. Liam is one of a long-line of Cahill siblings who have been a part of Boca throughout the clubs 30-year history. As a senior at Manchester, was named First Team All-State, All-County and took home All-Star Game MVP honors.
Nicholas Chiarella (Toms River) Monsignor Donovan-Junior Midfielder Mount St. Mary’s University; The Mon Don alum made four appearances in his sophomore campaign and appeared in two games in his freshman year. Chiarella made collegiate debut in a 4-0 victory against VMI on Sept. 1, 2009. A four-year letter winner with the Griffins, Chiarella served as team captain in his senior campaign. He was part of the Boca U23 them this past summer.
Dana Costello (Jackson) Jackson Memorial-Sophomore Forward Monmouth University; Costello appeared in all 18 matches for the Hawks as a freshman, earning 17 starting nods. She tied for the team-lead in points scored (17) and registered a team-best eight goals. The former Jaguar made her collegiate debut with a pair of goals in Monmouth’s win at NJIT on August 27 last year. Costello was a four-year varsity letter winner and two-time captain at Jackson Memorial High School. A newcomer to the Boca U23 women’s team this summer, Costello helped the team capture he 2011 MSSL Cup Championship.
Claire Donohue (Red Bank) Red Bank Regional-Sophomore Forward-FDU Florham Park Donohue, a savvy forward with a nose for the goal, appeared in 24 games as a freshman for FDU while starting 14 of them. Tallied 3 goals, 4 assists with 46 shots and placed third on the team in scoring with 10 points. She teamed with fellow Boca U23 teammate Lauren Albrecht to lead Devils to ECAC semi-finals in 2010. Donohue was a first year member of the Boca U23 women’s team that captured the 2011 MSSL Cup Championship this past summer.
Clay Gashlin (Bayville) Central Regional-Junior Midfielder-Richard Stockton College; The solid midfielder, who is slated for a break-out year this season, started all 21 games in which he played in 2010 for the Ospreys. Gashlin scored his first career goal vs. Manhattanville on September 1 last year in his first game with Stockton. Gashlin transferred to Stockton after one season at Ocean County College. He was a member of the Boca U23 and U20 teams for several years.
Laura Hern (Wall) St. Rose-Senior Defender-Kutztown University; Hern was named 2011 captain by notable Boca alum and Kutztown head women’s coach Erik Burstein. In 2010, the tough defender played in 20 games and started18 for the Golden Bears. She anchored a defensive unit that helped Kutztown record 11 shutouts. In her sophomore year, Hearn saw action in 20 games and was a key member of a defense that permitted only 17 goals and posted a school record 13 shutouts. She helped Kutztown win a school record 15 matches. Kutztown finished the 2010 season ranked No. 24 in the final regular season National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 poll and it qualified for the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region playoffs for the second straight season. The Wall Township native is a four year member of the Boca U23 women’s team that captured three consecutive MSSL Cup Championships.
Maddie Mauer (Manasquan) Wall-Junior Defender-East Carolina University; As a sophomore Mauer started 10 of 19 games played logging nearly 1,200 minutes on the pitch. The former Squan defender started the final eight games of the season – all in league play and was instrumental in helping the Pirates record a pair of shutouts on the season (N.C State and UTEP). Mauer was named to the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and to the ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll her two years as a Pirate. Mauer is a four year member of the Boca U23 women’s team that captured three consecutive MSSL Cup Championships.
Ryan O’Donnell (Toms River) Toms River North-Junior Midfielder-College of New Jersey; The former Mariner played in 18 games as a sophomore for the Lions while starting 17 of them. He tallied one goal on twelve shots taken. A midfielder with an eye for the game, he is expected to make a big contribution for Coach George Nazario as the Lions set their sights on the New Jersey Athletic Conference title and beyond. O’Donnell has been a member of the Boca U23 team for two years.
Joseph Parella (Howell) Howell-Senior Forward-Rowan University; Parella played in 20 games for Rowan in 2010 tallying 3 goals and 1 assist and managed 24 shots on goal. Parella, who transferred from Brookdale Community College where he earned All-America first team honors in 2009, was a teammate with Boca standout goalkeeper Charlie Cunliffe with the Profs last year. The Howell native was a member of the Boca U23 team this past summer.
Andrew Smith (Brick) Brick-Red Shirt Junior Defender-Old Dominion University; A former four-year Green Dragon starter, Smith started two games and appeared in 4 for the Monarchs Coach Alan Dawson last season and appeared in 2 matches his freshman year. He was a member of the Boca U23 team this season.
Jersey Shore Boca has been a fixture in the soccer community since 1978 and is one of the most respected soccer clubs on the East Coast.
The club is celebrating their 33-year anniversary in 2011.
