Konopka Earns BIG EAST Honors

Standout goalkeeper helps lead Providence College to best undefeated start since 1972

PROVIDENCE, RI (September 19, 2005) – Providence College junior goalkeeper Chris Konopka, a long-time veteran of the Jersey Shore Boca Soccer Club, was honored today by the Big East Conference as he was named the “Big-East Goalkeeper of the Week” for his performances against Louisville and Cincinnati in games this week as announced by league officials on Monday.

Konopka, who is a 2003 Toms River East graduate, has helped the Friars (2-0-4) remain undefeated during the 2005 college season and marked the first time since 1972 that Providence opened the season undefeated through six games.

It also is just the third time in the 38-year history of the program that the Friars are undefeated through six games.

On Friday at Louisville, the standout keeper made 8 saves in 110 minutes of action against the Cardinals, including stopping a Louisville penalty-kick attempt with six seconds remaining in the first half to help Providence to a 1-1 double overtime tie.

On Sunday at Cincinnati, Konopka back-stopped Providence to another 1-1 double overtime tie against the Bearcats while making 8 saves including several at point-blank range during the two overtime periods.

In 620 minutes between the pipes this year, the Toms River native has registered 36 saves and has allowed only 4 goals.

Through all games of September 19th, Konopka ranks first among all Big-East goalkeepers in saves (36), first in saves per game (6.0), is tied for sixth in shut-outs (2), is tied for ninth in shut-outs per game (0.50) and ranks third in goals against average (.058).

Providence College remains the only undefeated men’s team in the Big-East Conference as of September 19th.

Konopka was a member of the Jersey Shore Boca U20 team this past summer that advanced to the semi-finals of the USASA U20 Regional Championship as well as the semi-finals of the MSSL Cup Championship.

Jersey Shore Boca has a record fifty-five club standouts who previously played for Boca on either their Men’s, Super Y-League, PDL, Club or Youth teams that are participating in NCAA intercollegiate soccer this fall for their respective institutions.

This is the highest number of Jersey Shore Boca players to ever participate in NCAA intercollegiate soccer during the same season in the club’s 27 year history.

Jersey Shore Boca has been a fixture in the soccer community since 1978 and is one of the most respected soccer clubs on the East Coast.

The Club is celebrating their 27-year anniversary in 2005.
