“Pontier gains honor”

Lacey’s team leader in goals scored, assists and total points, Christian Pontier, is the 2002 South of the Border boys soccer Player of the Year.

Pontier, a senior and four-year starter, led the Lions by hitting for 13 goals, dishing off for 11 feeds and completing the campaign with a total of 37 points.

Another heralded booter that, like Pontier, gained All-Shore and All-County recognition was Central defender Leo Mihalkovitz, a senior who marked the top player on all opposing teams with great success.

Pontier has some talented company at the All-South of the Border forward positions in Pinelands’ Jack Facemyer, Southern’s Joe Cutler and Central’s Anthony Corozza, while Mihalkovitz’s defensive partners included a pair of teammates, Adam Than and Joe Kelly, and Southern’s Cole Strattman.

Midfielders Andrew Krebs of Lacey, and Kevin Kirk and Mario Parres of Southern, along with Central goalie Bryan Haskell, round out the 2002 All-South of the Border Boys Soccer Team. This year’s boys soccer Coach of the Year was Lacey mentor John MacIntosh, whose club went a respectable 9-7-1 and made the NJSIAA state tournament.
