Six Boca Players To Compete in NCAA DIII Championship

Six Jersey Shore Boca standouts will have the opportunity to represent their schools in the 2006 NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship which begins on Wednesday Nov 8. All six were members of Boca’s U20 and U23 teams advanced to the semi-finals of the USASA Regional Championships as well as the semi-finals of the MSSL Cup Championship in both 2005 and 2006.

Former Club standouts help Stevens and Lynchburg vie for titles

TOMS RIVER, NJ (November 7, 2006) – Six Jersey Shore Boca players will have the opportunity to represent their schools in the 2006 NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship which begins on Wednesday Nov 8 and ends on November 25 with a National Champion being crowned in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

Five of the six, seniors George and Nick Gkionis (Jackson, NJ), Brandon Schaefer (Albuquerque, NM), Chris McGreevy (Rochester Hills, MI) and junior Versh Tivzenda (Marietta, GA) helped Stevens Institute of Technology advance to the NCAA Division III Championship field for the fourth straight year and the fifth time in program history.

Stevens has been selected as the host school for the Second Round on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the College of Staten Island. The Ducks will host the winner of the University of Rochester – Hamilton College game, which is slated for Wednesday, November 8 at Rochester.

The Ducks, which earned an automatic bid after winning their fourth-straight Skyline Conference Tournament, enter the game 17-0-2.

In 2005, Stevens reached the Sectional Semifinals of the NCAA tourney before suffering a 3-1 loss to No. 4 Trinity University.

Casey Zambor (Jackson, NJ) and the Lynchburg College men’s soccer team defeated Virginia Wesleyan College 1-0 in the 2006 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship game Nov 4 and received an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

The Hornet defense gave up just one goal in 277 minutes and 11 seconds in the three matches of the tournament, and allowed no shots on goal in the tournament finale. It is Lynchburg’s 11th ODAC title overall, but the first since the 1987 campaign.

Lynchburg (14-4-2) will compete against North Carolina Wesleyan College Saturday at 5 p.m. at Virginia Wesleyan College. The winner will play Sunday in the Second Round at 6 p.m. at VWC against the Greensboro/Virginia Wesleyan winner.

Zambor, a senior midfielder, recently earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors, as voted on by the Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The 2003 Monsignor Donovan graduate was also named to the 2006 ODAC All-Tournament Team.

All six Club standouts, were members of Boca’s U20 and U23 teams for the past several years that advanced to the semi-finals of the USASA Regional Championships as well as the semi-finals of the MSSL Cup Championship in both 2005 and 2006.

Jersey Shore Boca has over fifty former club standouts who previously played for Boca on either their Men’s, Super Y-League, PDL, Club or Youth teams that participated in NCAA intercollegiate soccer this fall for their respective institutions either as players or coaches.

This is one of the highest numbers ever of Jersey Shore Boca alumni to ever participate in NCAA intercollegiate soccer during the same season in the club’s 28 year history.

Jersey Shore Boca has been a fixture in the soccer community since 1978 and is one of the most respected soccer clubs on the East Coast.

The Club is celebrating their 28-year anniversary in 2006.
